Origin
Operculicarya pachypus is endemic to Southwestern Madagascar, specifically localized in the region of Toliara (Tulear). It was officially described by Urs Eggli in 1995. Due to its very restricted range and slow growth rate, it is a highly prized rarity in the international plant trade.

Habitat
In its natural environment, this species thrives in deciduous dry forests on limestone rocky plateaus. It is a calcicolous plant, meaning it prefers alkaline environments. It grows in areas with intense sun exposure and very low annual rainfall, using its massive succulent trunk to store water and survive prolonged periods of drought.

Description
Operculicarya pachypus is a spectacular pachycaul tree, widely regarded as one of the most prestigious "bonsai-style" succulents in the world.

Caudex & Trunk: The most iconic feature is its conical, swollen trunk (hence the name "pachypus", meaning "thick foot"). The bark is yellowish-brown or grayish and is densely covered in rugged, warty tubercles and protuberances, giving it an ancient, weathered appearance.

Branches: It produces complex, zig-zagging (flexuous) branches that are naturally stunted and intricate. This growth habit allows it to look like a mature bonsai even without pruning.

Foliage: It features tiny, pinnate leaves with glossy, deep green leaflets. The leaves are significantly smaller than those of its relative, O. decaryi, which adds to its refined aesthetic.

Flowers: It is a dioecious species. It produces tiny, inconspicuous yellowish-green flowers that are sessile or subsessile (almost stalkless) on the branch tips.

Cultivation: This is a very slow-growing and long-lived species. It requires full sun to maintain its compact form and a well-draining mineral substrate with a slightly alkaline pH. It is deciduous and should be kept warm and dry during its winter dormancy.

Light

Provide partial to full sun. Most plants thrive on direct UV exposure. Avoid placing behind window glass, as it filters out the essential UV rays needed for healthy growth.

Water

Follow the "Soak and Dry" principle. Ensure the top 2–3 cm of soil is bone dry before watering (use the finger test). Reduce frequency in winter, but do not stop watering entirely.

Temperature

The ideal range is 18–35 °C. Maintain temperatures above 5 °C during winter. Please note that temperatures below 0 °C pose a significant risk of plant death.

Humidity

Best kept at 30–50% humidity. Note: High air humidity is not a substitute for root watering. Avoid overly damp areas to prevent root rot or leggy side shoots.

Soil

A loose, well-draining medium is ideal. A mix containing 50–70% grit or mineral soil is recommended for aeration. Outdoor ground planting is also a viable option.

Fertilizer

Fertilize during repotting using Osmocote A2 slow-release fertilizer. Apply sparingly twice a year, or adjust the fertilizer type based on your specific home environment.

After 24 hours of rest, pot the plant using slightly moistened soil. Place it in a bright, airy location to encourage recovery. Keep away from AC vents or heaters to prevent damage from temperature fluctuations.
