Botanical Morphology

Leaves are imparipinnate (with 2–6 pairs of opposite leaflets plus one terminal leaflet) and covered in a dense, soft, velvety pubescence on both surfaces. Inflorescences are small axillary clusters of yellowish-pink 4-merous flowers appearing before or alongside new foliage. The fruit is a globose, densely hairy drupe (~1 cm in diameter) that splits when mature to reveal a single black seed partially enclosed by a 4-lobed, bright red pseudo-aril.

  • Etymology: The genus name Commiphora derives from the Ancient Greek kommi (gum or resin) and phora (bearer), referring to its aromatic resin. The specific epithet mollis is Latin for "soft," describing the dense, velvety trichomes on the foliage.

  • Historical Context: First collected in Mozambique and described under the basionym Balsamodendrum molle by British botanist Daniel Oliver in 1868, the species was reclassified into Commiphora by Heinrich Gustav Adolf Engler in 1883 (Monographiae Phanerogamarum). Commonly known in Southern Africa as "Velvet Corkwood" or "Kanniedood" (Afrikaans for "cannot die") because unrooted branch cuttings easily strike roots, making it a historic choice for living fences.

Light
