Botanical Morphology

  • Diagnostic Features: Smooth, yellowish to pale grey peeling bark (cuajiote blanco / copal amarillo), yielding an aromatic resin rich in terpene volatiles (notably sabinene). Leaves are deciduous, imparipinnate, with 7–15 opposite, puberulent, oblong-lanceolate to elliptical leaflets. Inflorescences consist of short, axillary panicles carrying tiny 4- to 5-merous greenish-yellow flowers. Fruits are small, 2- to 3-valved drupaceous capsules enclosing a single seed covered by a conspicuous orange-red aril.

History & Etymology

  • Etymology: The genus name Bursera honors German-Danish physician and botanist Joachim Burser (1583–1639). The specific epithet ariensis denotes its discovery site near the municipality of Ario (Ario de Rosales) in Michoacán, Mexico.

  • Historical Context: Originally collected during Humboldt and Bonpland's expedition and published under the basionym Elaphrium ariense by Carl Sigismund Kunth in 1824. Reclassified into Bursera by Rogers McVaugh and Jerzy Rzedowski in 1965 (Kew Bulletin). Traditionally prized in southern Mexico for its aromatic copal resin used in incense and regional remedies.

Light
