  • Habitat Characteristics: Occurs at elevations between 100 and 1,000 meters above sea level. It grows on hyper-arid rocky slopes, quartzite ridges, and granite rock crevices. Soils are highly drained, coarse sandy/grit substrates. Annual precipitation in its native range is extremely low, averaging less than 80 mm per year.

Botanical Morphology

  • Diagnostic Features: A dioecious pachycaul shrub or small succulent tree growing 0.5–3 m tall, with thick stems branching low near ground level. Bark is greyish-green to yellowish-brown with dark patches, non-peeling (a key distinction from peeling bark in many other Commiphora species). Fruits are glabrous, ellipsoid (~11 × 10 × 6 mm) with a smooth putamen, and completely lack a pseudo-aril (distinguishing it from C. capensis, which has rotund, non-lobed leaflets).

  • Growth Habit: Extremely slow-growing pachycaul succulent. Winter-active/opportunistic grower that drops foliage during extreme summer heat and drought. Reaches up to 3 meters in native habitats, but maintains a compact, swollen, sculptural trunk structure under cultivation.

History & Etymology

  • Etymology: The specific epithet cervifolia derives from Latin cervus ("stag" or "deer") and folium ("leaf"), directly referring to the antler-like, deeply lobed shape of the leaflets. Commonly known as the Antler-leaved Corkwood.

  • Historical Context: Formally described in 1971 by South African botanist J.J.A. van der Walt in the Journal of South African Botany (37:189) based on the holotype specimen Van der Walt 128, collected 8 km south of Vioolsdrif. Endemic to the arid border region along the Gariep (Orange) River between Namibia and South Africa, it is highly sought after by caudiciform and pachycaul collectors for its rare foliage architecture and smooth stem texture.
