  • Habitat Characteristics: This species is typically found at altitudes of 1,300 to 1,500 meters. It grows in sandy soils within Miombo (Brachystegia) woodlands, often situated on the margins of seasonally flooded grasslands known as "dambos." It prefers well-drained, acidic substrates amidst leaf litter and grasses.

Botanical Morphology

  • Diagnostic Features: Euphorbia fanshawei is a dwarf geophytic perennial distinguished by its massive, woody, and fusiform (spindle-shaped) tuberous rootstock, which can reach up to 15 cm in length. Unlike many succulent Euphorbias, its aerial stems are extremely reduced, often barely emerging from the soil. The leaves are deciduous, linear to narrowly lanceolate, reaching up to 10–12 cm. Its most defining feature is the cyathium (floral structure), which features involucral glands with distinctive fimbriate (finger-like) appendages, a trait that separates it from closely related geophytic species like E. decidua.
  • Growth Habit: It exhibits a strict seasonal dormancy; the herbaceous top growth dies back completely to the tuber during the dry winter months (May–September). Growth is relatively slow, focusing energy on tuber expansion. The plant rarely exceeds 5–10 cm in height above ground.

Etymology: The specific epithet fanshawei honors Dennys B. Fanshawe (1915–1993), a British forester and prolific plant collector who spent decades documenting the flora of Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia).
