Botanical Morphology

  • Diagnostic Features: A dwarf medusoid-type geophytic succulent. Stems consist of a short, subterranean bole- or club-shaped caudex (up to 5 cm in diameter) merging into a stout fleshy taproot. Radiating upright to ascending club-shaped branches (2.5–4 cm long, 12–20 mm thick) are bluish-green, covered in crowded rhomboid-conical tubercles (3–4 mm tall) with persistent tiny tooth-like leaf scars. Primary Diagnostic Character: Cyathia are solitary at branch tips, shallowly cup-shaped, possessing 5 spreading nectar glands. Each gland bears 4–6 filiform processes (0.5–1.5 mm long) at its outer margin that are distinctly forked or multi-branched at their tips.

  • Growth Habit: Cryptic subterranean habit; in native habitats, stems and branches are often buried completely in shifting sands, leaving only the cyathia or branch tips exposed. Reaches a maximum height of 10–20 cm and lateral spread up to 50 cm. Growth is slow and opportunistic, keyed to winter moisture and cold-season fog events.

  • Etymology: The specific epithet ramiglans derives from the Latin ramus ("branch") and glans ("gland"), directly referring to the characteristic branched/forked processes on the cyathial nectar glands.
