Description

Geographic & Climate

  • Geographic Coordinates: Mauritius (historical Type Locality: Le Pouce range / Mapou district: ~20°11'50"S, 57°31'43"E; extant distribution range across Trois Mamelles, Montagne Rempart, and Yemen/Magenta reserves: 19°58'S – 20°31'S, 57°18'E – 57°46'E).

  • Climate Classification: Tropical Savanna / Monsoon with local dry rain-shadow influence (Köppen: Aw / As).

  • Habitat Characteristics: Relict dry and semi-dry tropical forests, basaltic mountain slopes, screes, and exposed rocky outcrops. Altitude: 50–650 m above sea level. Precipitation: 800–1,500 mm annually with a pronounced dry winter season. Substrate: porous, highly drained volcanic basalt gravel and lithosols with low organic humus.

Botanical Morphology

  • Diagnostic Features: A textbook example of insular gigantism; it is the only true arborescent, pachycaul tree in the genus Cyphostemma. Unlike most Vitaceae and typical congeners, it has completely lost climbing tendrils. Features a massive, soft, succulent water-storing trunk reminiscent of a miniature baobab, capped by brittle, zigzagging (flexuous) fleshy branches. Exhibits marked anti-herbivore heterophylly: juvenile foliage consists of narrow, lanceolate, reddish-pink leaflets (an evolutionary defense against extinct Cylindraspis giant tortoises), whereas mature foliage transitions to large, oval, imparipinnate succulent green leaflets. Produces small, four-parted yellowish-green flowers followed by velvety red, grape-like berries.

  • Growth Habit: Warm-season active grower; deciduous during cool, dry winter resting periods. Growth rate is slow to moderate. Mature wild specimens reach 4–10 m in height with trunk diameters exceeding 0.8–1.5 m.

History & Etymology

  • Etymology: The generic name Cyphostemma originates from the Greek kyphos (bent, humped) and stemma (garland, crown), referring to the swollen, curved glands on the floral disc. The specific epithet mappia is derived from the Mauritian Creole vernacular "Bois Mapou", which also gave its name to the northern district of Mapou where early populations were documented.

  • Historical Context: Originally collected during early French colonial exploration of Île de France (Mauritius) and described by Jean-Baptiste Lamarck in 1792 as Cissus mappia. It was later transferred to Cyphostemma by ampelographer Pierre Galet in 1967. Known locally as the "Mauritian Baobab", it suffered catastrophic wild declines from deforestation and invasive species. Today, it is revered in ex-situ conservation and international caudiciform horticulture as one of the rarest pachycaul succulents.

Care Guide

Essential Care Tips for Thriving Plants

Light

Provide partial to full sun. Most plants thrive on direct UV exposure. Avoid placing behind window glass, as it filters out the essential UV rays needed for healthy growth.

Water

Follow the "Soak and Dry" principle. Ensure the top 2–3 cm of soil is bone dry before watering (use the finger test). Reduce frequency in winter, but do not stop watering entirely.

Temperature

The ideal range is 18–35 °C. Maintain temperatures above 5 °C during winter. Please note that temperatures below 0 °C pose a significant risk of plant death.

Humidity

Best kept at 30–50% humidity. Note: High air humidity is not a substitute for root watering. Avoid overly damp areas to prevent root rot or leggy side shoots.

Soil

A loose, well-draining medium is ideal. A mix containing 50–70% grit or mineral soil is recommended for aeration. Outdoor ground planting is also a viable option.

Fertilizer

Fertilize during repotting using Osmocote A2 slow-release fertilizer. Apply sparingly twice a year, or adjust the fertilizer type based on your specific home environment.

Planting Guide

Start Your Green Journey in 4 Steps

Unbox & Inspect

Carefully unpack and inspect the plant’s body and roots. We recommend taking photos or videos immediately for your records. Place it in a shaded, well-ventilated spot for 1–2 days to acclimate to its new environment.

Potting & Placement

After 24 hours of rest, pot the plant using slightly moistened soil. Place it in a bright, airy location to encourage recovery. Keep away from AC vents or heaters to prevent damage from temperature fluctuations.

First Watering

Use water that has sat for at least 24 hours. If using the damp-potting method, wait 2–3 days before the first watering. Ensure a thorough soak until water drains freely from the bottom.

Daily Care

Monitor leaf condition and soil moisture daily. If the soil remains damp, increase ventilation rather than watering. Proper airflow is essential to prevent root rot and ensure lasting health.
