Botanical Morphology

  • Diagnostic Features: Solitary, globose to dynamic elongated cylindrical stem (up to 100 cm tall, 10–15 cm in diameter) featuring a dark reddish-brown, purplish, or dark green epidermis covered with a granular, waxy white bloom. It typically possesses 15–18 prominent, sharp, vertical ribs. Areoles are closely set and confluent along the rib crests, producing dense, comb-like (pectinate) dark brown to black central spines (up to 1.5–2.5 cm long) aligned in a continuous ridge. Flowers are small, diurnal, funnelform, greenish-yellow (15–20 mm long, 12–15 mm wide), emerging near the apex.

  • Etymology: The generic name Uebelmannia honors Werner Uebelmann (1921–2014), a Swiss cactus importer and collector who financed botanical expeditions to South America. The specific epithet pectinifera derives from Latin pecten (comb) and -fer (bearing), translating to "comb-bearing," directly referring to the arrangement of spines along the ribs.

  • Historical Context: Discovered in 1966 by the Dutch botanist Albert Frederik Hendrik Buining and professional collector Leopoldo Horst in Minas Gerais, Brazil. The species was formally described by Buining in 1967 in the journal National Cactus and Succulent Journal. Its unique, sculpture-like appearance caused a major sensation in the worldwide succulent community during the late 20th century, leading to historical over-exploitation that rendered it an endangered species in its native range.

Light
