Origin
Jatropha marginata is native to Northeast Africa, with its primary distribution centered in Ethiopia and Somalia. It belongs to the Euphorbiaceae family. The species name "marginata" refers to the distinct, often thickened or colored margins of its leaves, which provide a sharp, clean aesthetic compared to other Jatropha species.
Habitat
In the wild, this species is found in arid to semi-arid bushlands and deciduous shrublands, typically at elevations between 200 and 1,100 meters. It thrives in stony, limestone-rich soils or red sandy loams. The habitat is characterized by intense solar radiation and prolonged dry seasons. To survive these conditions, the plant grows as a geophyte or small shrub, utilizing its swollen base to store moisture and nutrients during periods of extreme drought.
Description
Jatropha marginata is an elegant, slow-growing succulent shrublet prized for its sculptural trunk and decorative foliage.
-
Caudex & Stem: It develops a woody, thickened base (caudex) that can be partially raised in cultivation for aesthetic appeal. The stems are typically grayish-brown, sparsely branched, and can reach 0.3 to 1 meter in height, although it often remains much smaller and more compact in containers.
-
Foliage: The leaves are the standout feature. They are generally ovate to slightly lobed, with a leathery texture. The leaf margins are often finely serrated or distinctly outlined, sometimes exhibiting a reddish tint when grown under bright light. The leaves are deciduous, dropping during the winter dormancy to protect the plant from dehydration.
-
Flowers: It produces small, star-shaped flowers that are typically bright red to orangey-red. These blooms appear in branched clusters (cymes) at the tips of the stems, providing a vibrant contrast against the green foliage.
-
Cultivation: This species is relatively hardy but sensitive to overwatering. It requires a highly porous, mineral-based potting mix. It thrives in full sun to bright indirect light; high light levels are essential to maintain its compact growth habit and distinct leaf margins.

Care Guide
- Light: Requires plenty of light year-round, but avoid direct sunlight, especially during the hottest part of the day.

- Humidity: Prefers well-ventilated environments; avoid overly dry or overly humid conditions.
- Watering: Water moderately when the soil is 70% dry or completely dry.
○In the warm growing season: 1–2 times per week
○In the cooler dormant season: 2–3 times per month
Adjust according to soil dryness and plant water uptake. - Soil: Best grown in well-draining soil; not demanding on soil type.
- Fertilizing: Rarely needs fertilization; recommend using Osmocote A2 slow-release fertilizer once or twice a year.
