Origin Euphorbia suzannae-marnierae is a rare succulent endemic to the South-Eastern coast of Madagascar, specifically in the region around Fort-Dauphin (Tôlanaro). It was named in honor of Suzanne Marnier-Lapostolle, a renowned botanical garden director and plant collector. Due to its limited distribution, it is a highly localized and protected species.

Habitat This species grows in the transition forests and coastal scrublands of South-East Madagascar. Unlike many highland Euphorbias that thrive in full sun, E. suzannae-marnierae is typically found in sandy soil or humus-rich leaf litter, often growing in the dappled shade of shrubs and trees. This environment has shaped its preference for slightly more humid conditions and filtered light compared to its desert-dwelling relatives.

Description Euphorbia suzannae-marnierae is a magnificent dwarf caudiciform succulent, prized for its "miniature forest" appearance and sophisticated color palette.

  • Caudex & Growth: It develops a prominent, thickened tuberous root system (caudex) that acts as a water reservoir. In cultivation, the plant is often raised to reveal its gnarled, sculptural base. It features short, spreading branches that radiate from the central apex, rarely exceeding 10–15 cm in height.

  • Foliage: The leaves are its most variable and beautiful feature. They are typically narrow, lanceolate to ovate, with slightly wavy (undulate) margins. Depending on light intensity, the foliage ranges from deep forest green to a rich coppery-purple or bronzy-red, often with a distinct pale midrib that creates a striking visual contrast.

  • Flowers (Cyathia): A key identifying feature of this species is its nodding (pendulous) flowers. The cyathia are relatively large for the plant's size and are typically a deep reddish-brown to dark purple color. They hang gracefully from the branch tips, distinguishing it from other Madagascan dwarf species.

  • Aesthetic: Its compact size, combined with its dramatic leaf coloration and unique hanging flowers, makes it an essential specimen for collectors of "Mame-bonsai" style succulents and Madagascan rarities.

Product Specifications

  • All plants are shipped bare-root, without pots or soil.
  • To prevent excessive nutrient loss during international shipping, which may make it harder for the plant to recover, we usually trim the leaves before delivery. If you prefer the plant to be shipped without trimming, please contact me in advance.

Planting Instructions

  1. Please collect the plants as soon as possible after arrival to avoid delays.
  2. Open the package immediately upon receipt and replant. Do not place in direct sunlight; keep in a shaded or indirect light location for 2–3 days.

Care Guide

  • Light: Requires plenty of light year-round, but avoid direct sunlight, especially during the hottest part of the day.
  • Temperature: Native to tropical arid–semi-arid climates; temperatures below 5°C (41°F) can cause frost damage.
  • Humidity: Prefers well-ventilated environments; avoid overly dry or overly humid conditions.
  • Watering: Water moderately when the soil is 70% dry or completely dry.
○In the warm growing season: 1–2 times per week
○In the cooler dormant season: 2–3 times per month
Adjust according to soil dryness and plant water uptake.
  • Soil: Best grown in well-draining soil; not demanding on soil type.
  • Fertilizing: Rarely needs fertilization; recommend using Osmocote A2 slow-release fertilizer once or twice a year.
