Description

Origin Euphorbia squarrosa is native to the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. It is widely distributed across the coastal and inland regions of the Eastern Cape, particularly within the Albany and surrounding districts. It was officially described by Haworth in 1827.

Habitat In its natural environment, this species thrives in stony, grass-covered hills and semi-arid shrublands. It typically grows with its massive tuberous rootstock (caudex) buried deep underground to protect it from extreme temperatures and bushfires. In the wild, only the sprawling, snake-like branches are visible above the soil, often nestled among grasses or stones. It is well-adapted to well-drained, mineral-rich soils and a climate with erratic rainfall.

Description Euphorbia squarrosa is a striking, perennial succulent geophyte highly prized for its massive, rugged caudex and architectural branching.

  • Caudex: It develops a very large, woody, and tuberous rootstock (caudex) that can reach up to 15–20 cm in diameter. The texture is rough and corky, often narrowing into a neck at the soil line. In cultivation, the caudex is typically raised above the soil to showcase its ancient, "bonsai-like" appearance.

  • Stems (Branches): From the top of the caudex, numerous stiff, sprawling branches emerge. These branches are typically 3-angled and feature a characteristic spiral or twisted growth pattern. They are grayish-green to dark green and are covered in prominent, downward-pointing "teeth" or tubercles.

  • Spines: Each tubercle is armed with a pair of short, sturdy, and dark-colored spines (about 2–5 mm long), giving the branches a rugged and "armored" look.

  • Foliage: The leaves are very small, ephemeral, and only appear on the tips of young growth, dropping off quickly.

  • Flowers (Cyathia): It produces small, yellowish-green flowers (cyathia) that emerge on short peduncles between the spines along the branches.

  • Cultivation: This is a resilient and slow-growing species. It requires full sun to bright indirect light to maintain its compact, twisted branching. A highly porous mineral substrate is essential to prevent caudex rot. It should be kept warm and mostly dry during its winter dormancy.

Light

Provide partial to full sun. Most plants thrive on direct UV exposure. Avoid placing behind window glass, as it filters out the essential UV rays needed for healthy growth.

Water

Follow the "Soak and Dry" principle. Ensure the top 2–3 cm of soil is bone dry before watering (use the finger test). Reduce frequency in winter, but do not stop watering entirely.

Temperature

The ideal range is 18–35 °C. Maintain temperatures above 5 °C during winter. Please note that temperatures below 0 °C pose a significant risk of plant death.

Humidity

Best kept at 30–50% humidity. Note: High air humidity is not a substitute for root watering. Avoid overly damp areas to prevent root rot or leggy side shoots.

Soil

A loose, well-draining medium is ideal. A mix containing 50–70% grit or mineral soil is recommended for aeration. Outdoor ground planting is also a viable option.

Fertilizer

Fertilize during repotting using Osmocote A2 slow-release fertilizer. Apply sparingly twice a year, or adjust the fertilizer type based on your specific home environment.
