Origin
Euphorbia paulianii is endemic to Madagascar, specifically localized in the Northwestern regions (near Majunga/Mahajanga). It was named in honor of the French entomologist and biologist Renaud Paulian, who made significant contributions to the study of Malagasy biodiversity. Like many rare Madagascan succulents, it is protected under CITES Appendix II.
Habitat
In its natural environment, this species thrives in deciduous dry forests and rocky shrublands. It is often found growing in sandy or silty soils among limestone or sandstone outcrops at low altitudes. The habitat is characterized by a high-contrast climate: a short, intense rainy season and a long, harsh dry season. E. paulianii has evolved a pachycaul (thick-stemmed) habit to store water, allowing it to remain dormant and survive for months without rainfall.
Description
Euphorbia paulianii is a spectacular, slow-growing succulent shrub that is often considered a "trophy" plant for collectors due to its architectural presence.
-
Stem & Trunk: It develops a stout, cylindrical, and pachycaul trunk that can reach up to 1 meter in height in the wild, though it remains much smaller in cultivation. The trunk is silvery-gray to brownish and is covered in prominent leaf scars and small, dark spines (stipular spines), giving it a rugged, prehistoric texture.
-
Foliage: This species is most famous for its large, leathery leaves that form a dense rosette at the apex. The leaves are broadly elliptical to obovate and often feature distinctly undulated (wavy) margins, which is a key identifying trait. The leaf color is a vibrant green, sometimes with a reddish or bronzed tint on the edges when exposed to intense light.
-
Flowers (Cyathia): It produces clusters of attractive cyathia at the branch tips. The bracts are typically greenish-yellow to reddish-brown, nestled within the crown of foliage.
-
Cultivation: This is a slow-growing and warmth-loving species. It requires bright, indirect light to full sun to maintain its thick trunk and the wavy character of its leaves. A highly porous, mineral-rich substrate is essential for root health. It is deciduous during its winter dormancy and should be kept warm and almost completely dry during this period.

Product Specifications
- All plants are shipped bare-root, without pots or soil.
- To prevent excessive nutrient loss during international shipping, which may make it harder for the plant to recover, we usually trim the leaves before delivery. If you prefer the plant to be shipped without trimming, please contact me in advance.
Planting Instructions
- Please collect the plants as soon as possible after arrival to avoid delays.
- Open the package immediately upon receipt and replant. Do not place in direct sunlight; keep in a shaded or indirect light location for 2–3 days.
- After the adaptation period, start watering and gradually transition the plant to direct sunlight.
Care Guide
- Light: Requires plenty of light year-round, but avoid direct sunlight, especially during the hottest part of the day.
- Temperature: Native to tropical arid–semi-arid climates; temperatures below 5°C (41°F) can cause frost damage.
- Humidity: Prefers well-ventilated environments; avoid overly dry or overly humid conditions.
- Watering: Water moderately when the soil is 70% dry or completely dry.
○In the warm growing season: 1–2 times per week
○In the cooler dormant season: 2–3 times per month
Adjust according to soil dryness and plant water uptake. - Soil: Best grown in well-draining soil; not demanding on soil type.
- Fertilizing: Rarely needs fertilization; recommend using Osmocote A2 slow-release fertilizer once or twice a year.
