Origin
This plant is a specialized horticultural hybrid derived from Euphorbia multifolia, which is endemic to the limestone regions of Western Madagascar (notably the Bemaraha Massif). The "Short Leaf" selection is a product of controlled nursery breeding, created to enhance the plant’s structural compact-ness. It combines the rugged, pachycaul genetics of the Madagascan forest species with traits that ensure a miniature, bonsai-like stature.
Habitat
As a cultivated hybrid, it does not exist in the wild. However, its parentage is rooted in deciduous dry forests and limestone karst (Tsingy) environments. These regions experience a harsh, prolonged dry season. In cultivation, this hybrid has been bred to be slightly more resilient than its pure-species ancestors, but it still thrives in environments that mimic high-drainage, mineral-rich rocky crevices with distinct seasonal watering cycles.
Description
The Euphorbia multifolia hybrid (Short Leaf) is a premium collector's item, prized for its architectural "mini-palm" silhouette and its exceptionally compact foliage.
-
Stem & Trunk: It develops a stout, cylindrical, and lignified (woody) trunk that thickens significantly at the base. The bark is grayish-silver and densely marked with geometric leaf scars, creating a textured, prehistoric appearance even in young specimens.
-
Foliage (Short Leaf Variant): Unlike the standard species which can have elongated leaves, this hybrid produces a dense crown of abbreviated, stiff, and narrow leaves. The leaves are bright green and arranged in a tight rosette at the apex. This "Short Leaf" trait ensures the plant maintains its scale and "bonsai" proportions as it grows.
-
Growth Habit: It is a slow-growing pachycaul. It typically grows as a solitary trunk but may develop multiple "heads" or branches at the crown over many years, forming a spectacular, multi-topped specimen.
-
Cultivation: This hybrid requires maximum light intensity to prevent the leaves from stretching and to keep the trunk stout. It necessitates a highly porous mineral substrate (pumice, lava rock, and grit). It is drought-tolerant and must be kept warm and mostly dry during its winter dormancy period.

Product Specifications
- All plants are shipped bare-root, without pots or soil.
- To prevent excessive nutrient loss during international shipping, which may make it harder for the plant to recover, we usually trim the leaves before delivery. If you prefer the plant to be shipped without trimming, please contact me in advance.
Planting Instructions
- Please collect the plants as soon as possible after arrival to avoid delays.
- Open the package immediately upon receipt and replant. Do not place in direct sunlight; keep in a shaded or indirect light location for 2–3 days.
- After the adaptation period, start watering and gradually transition the plant to direct sunlight.
Care Guide
- Light: Requires plenty of light year-round, but avoid direct sunlight, especially during the hottest part of the day.
- Temperature: Native to tropical arid–semi-arid climates; temperatures below 5°C (41°F) can cause frost damage.
- Humidity: Prefers well-ventilated environments; avoid overly dry or overly humid conditions.
- Watering: Water moderately when the soil is 70% dry or completely dry.
○In the warm growing season: 1–2 times per week
○In the cooler dormant season: 2–3 times per month
Adjust according to soil dryness and plant water uptake. - Soil: Best grown in well-draining soil; not demanding on soil type.
- Fertilizing: Rarely needs fertilization; recommend using Osmocote A2 slow-release fertilizer once or twice a year.
Shipping Notice
- After receiving your order, we require 3–5 days for leaf trimming, soil removal, and drying to ensure safe long-distance transport.
