Origin

Both species are endemic to South Africa.

  • Euphorbia horrida: Primarily found in the Eastern Cape and parts of the Western Cape (specifically the Little Karoo and Great Karoo regions).

  • Euphorbia polygona: Primarily restricted to the Eastern Cape Province, often found in the Uitenhage and Albany districts. Both were documented in the late 18th to early 19th centuries and have since become iconic symbols of African succulent flora.

Habitat

They share similar ecological niches, thriving in arid, rocky slopes and karroid scrublands.

  • They are typically found nestled among sandstone or quartzite rocks, which provide both mineral-rich drainage and some protection for young plants.

  • The habitat is characterized by low, erratic rainfall and extreme temperature fluctuations. To survive, these plants have evolved a columnar, rib-heavy structure that allows for expansion during rains and provides self-shading to reduce heat stress.

Description

While both are dioecious (separate male and female plants) and look like cacti (convergent evolution), they have distinct ornamental features:

Euphorbia horrida (African Milk Barrel / 魁伟玉)

  • Growth Habit: Initially globose, becoming a stout, clumping cylinder with age. It can reach up to 1 meter in height.

  • Ribs & Spines: Known for its deeply sunken valleys between 10–20 sharp ridges. The "spines" are actually dried peduncles (flower stalks) that persist on the plant, giving it a fierce, "horrid" (as per its name) appearance.

  • Color: Often exhibits a beautiful glaucous (waxy) blue-gray to silver-white epidermis, which is highly prized by collectors.

Euphorbia polygona (African Milk Barrel / 宝轮玉)

  • Growth Habit: More prone to heavy clumping from the base than E. horrida. Stems are typically more slender and upright.

  • Ribs & Spines: Features numerous "polygonal" ridges (often more than 20). The persistent peduncles are usually shorter and less formidable than those of E. horrida.

  • Flowers: The most striking feature of E. polygona (especially the 'Snowflake' cultivar) is its deep purple to near-black flowers (cyathia), which provide a stunning contrast against the white/silver body.

Product Specifications

  • All plants are shipped bare-root, without pots or soil.
  • To prevent excessive nutrient loss during international shipping, which may make it harder for the plant to recover, we usually trim the leaves before delivery. If you prefer the plant to be shipped without trimming, please contact me in advance.

Planting Instructions

  1. Please collect the plants as soon as possible after arrival to avoid delays.
  2. Open the package immediately upon receipt and replant. Do not place in direct sunlight; keep in a shaded or indirect light location for 2–3 days.
  3. After the adaptation period, start watering and gradually transition the plant to direct sunlight.

Care Guide

  • Light: Requires plenty of light year-round, but avoid direct sunlight, especially during the hottest part of the day.
  • Temperature: Native to tropical arid–semi-arid climates; temperatures below 5°C (41°F) can cause frost damage.
  • Humidity: Prefers well-ventilated environments; avoid overly dry or overly humid conditions.
  • Watering: Water moderately when the soil is 70% dry or completely dry.
○In the warm growing season: 1–2 times per week
○In the cooler dormant season: 2–3 times per month
Adjust according to soil dryness and plant water uptake.
  • Soil: Best grown in well-draining soil; not demanding on soil type.
  • Fertilizing: Rarely needs fertilization; recommend using Osmocote A2 slow-release fertilizer once or twice a year.

Shipping Notice

  • After receiving your order, we require 3–5 days for leaf trimming, soil removal, and drying to ensure safe long-distance transport.
  • We ship via air freight; delivery time is usually 8–16 days.

(For Wholesale Orders) International Shipping

  • We can provide a phytosanitary certificate.
  • The certificate fee is not included in the plant price and will be charged separately. For most standard orders, the fee is typically USD 100.
