Origin

Euphorbia clavigera is native to Southern Africa, primarily distributed in South Africa (Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal), Eswatini (Swaziland), and southern Mozambique. The "blue" variety is a highly sought-after horticultural selection prized for its intense glaucous coloration. It belongs to the Euphorbia section Monanthium, a group of African succulents known for their thick, subterranean or partially exposed caudices.

Habitat

In the wild, this species thrives in subtropical dry bushlands and rocky savannas, often growing in the low-veld regions. It is typically found in shallow, sandy, or gravelly soils among rocks, where it can anchor its massive underground rootstock. The habitat is characterized by distinct wet and dry seasons; the blue waxy coating on the foliage and stems serves as a vital defense mechanism, reflecting intense ultraviolet radiation and reducing water loss through transpiration.

Description

Euphorbia clavigera var. (blue) is a spectacular caudiciform succulent, blending rugged architectural forms with elegant, cool-toned coloration.

  • Caudex & Stem: It develops a large, fleshy, and tuberous underground caudex that can be partially raised in cultivation for display. From the crown of this caudex, numerous flattened, club-shaped (clavate) branches emerge. These branches are multi-angled and typically grow in a spreading or upright-decumbent fashion.

  • Coloration: The most striking feature of the "blue" variety is its powder-blue to silver-gray epidermis. This glaucous coating covers the stems and young leaves, providing a stark, modern aesthetic that contrasts beautifully with traditional green succulents.

  • Spines: Along the wavy margins of the stem ridges, it possesses pairs of sturdy, dark brown to grayish spines. These spines are set on continuous horny shields, accentuating the plant’s geometric silhouette.

  • Foliage: During the growing season, it produces small, blue-tinted leaves at the tips of the new growth. These leaves are typically ephemeral and will drop as the plant enters dormancy.

  • Cultivation: This is a slow-growing, premium collector's plant. It requires a very porous mineral substrate and prefers full sun to bright indirect light—maximum light is essential to maintain the intense blue coloration. It is drought-tolerant but enjoys regular watering in summer, provided the drainage is perfect. Keep it warm and dry during winter dormancy.

Product Specifications

  • All plants are shipped bare-root, without pots or soil.
  • To prevent excessive nutrient loss during international shipping, which may make it harder for the plant to recover, we usually trim the leaves before delivery. If you prefer the plant to be shipped without trimming, please contact me in advance.

Planting Instructions

  1. Please collect the plants as soon as possible after arrival to avoid delays.
  2. Open the package immediately upon receipt and replant. Do not place in direct sunlight; keep in a shaded or indirect light location for 2–3 days.
  3. After the adaptation period, start watering and gradually transition the plant to direct sunlight.

Care Guide

  • Light: Requires plenty of light year-round, but avoid direct sunlight, especially during the hottest part of the day.
  • Temperature: Native to tropical arid–semi-arid climates; temperatures below 5°C (41°F) can cause frost damage.
  • Humidity: Prefers well-ventilated environments; avoid overly dry or overly humid conditions.
  • Watering: Water moderately when the soil is 70% dry or completely dry.
○In the warm growing season: 1–2 times per week
○In the cooler dormant season: 2–3 times per month
Adjust according to soil dryness and plant water uptake.
  • Soil: Best grown in well-draining soil; not demanding on soil type.
  • Fertilizing: Rarely needs fertilization; recommend using Osmocote A2 slow-release fertilizer once or twice a year.
