Origin Euphorbia bupleurifolia is native to South Africa, primarily distributed along the eastern regions, including the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal provinces. It is a classic representative of the South African "Grassveld" flora.

Habitat In its natural environment, this species thrives on grassy slopes and stony hillsides, often found tucked between rocks or partially hidden among tall grass tufts. It grows in areas that experience summer rainfall. The surrounding vegetation provides a microclimate that protects the young plants from extreme temperatures and fire, which is a common occurrence in its native grassland habitat.

Description Euphorbia bupleurifolia is a slow-growing, solitary succulent prized for its extraordinary "pine cone" or "cycad-like" morphology.

  • The Trunk (Caudex): It develops a thick, spheroidal to cylindrical trunk that typically reaches 10–20 cm in height. The most iconic feature is its surface, which is densely covered in prominent, geometric tubercles (leaf scars) arranged in a perfect spiral. This gives the plant a rugged, prehistoric texture.

  • Foliage: The species name bupleurifolia means "leaves like Bupleurum" (Hare's Ear). It produces a lush crown of long, narrow, lanceolate leaves from the apex of the trunk during the growing season. These leaves are vibrant green and deciduous, falling away during the winter dormancy to reveal the intricate patterns of the trunk.
