1. Origin

  • Geographic Range: This species is endemic to the Central Highlands of Madagascar, specifically concentrated in the Ihosy region and the northern parts of the Horombe Plateau.

2. Habitat & Climate

  • Substrate: It is a specialist of rocky savanna and granite outcrops (inselbergs). It grows in shallow, acidic sandy soils or wedged within the cracks of weathered granite rocks, often sharing its habitat with Pachypodium horombense.

  • Temperature: It is adapted to significant diurnal temperature shifts. Daytime temperatures in summer reach $25^\circ \text{C}$ to $32^\circ \text{C}$, while winter nights on the plateau can drop to $8^\circ \text{C}$ to $12^\circ \text{C}$. This altitude-driven cooling is essential for its compact growth.

3. Morphological Characteristics

  • Form: A dwarf, highly branched deciduous succulent shrub. It typically reaches a height of $20 - 40$ cm, forming a dense, intricate thicket of slender stems.

  • Stems: The epidermis is a rugged greyish-brown to silvery-grey, giving the plant an ancient, weathered appearance even at a young age.

  • Flowers (Cyathia): It produces tiny, inconspicuous yellowish-green flowers on very short peduncles.

4. Etymology & Story 

  • Etymology: The name is derived from the Greek words "brachys" (short) and "phyllon" (leaf). It literally translates to "the short-leaved Euphorbia."

  • The Story: Euphorbia brachyphylla was long considered a "secondary" species compared to its more flamboyant relatives like E. milii. However, it was rediscovered by collectors who appreciated the "Wabi-sabi"  aesthetic. In its native Horombe Plateau, it survives intense seasonal bushfires by growing in the heart of rock fissures where the flames cannot reach. Among enthusiasts, it is prized for its "Micro-landscape" potential—its thin, angular branches and tiny leaves make it look like a century-old giant tree that has been shrunk to fit on a tabletop.

Essential Care Tips for Thriving Plants

Light

Provide partial to full sun. Most plants thrive on direct UV exposure. Avoid placing behind window glass, as it filters out the essential UV rays needed for healthy growth.

Water

Follow the "Soak and Dry" principle. Ensure the top 2–3 cm of soil is bone dry before watering (use the finger test). Reduce frequency in winter, but do not stop watering entirely.

Temperature

The ideal range is 18–35 °C. Maintain temperatures above 5 °C during winter. Please note that temperatures below 0 °C pose a significant risk of plant death.

Humidity

Best kept at 30–50% humidity. Note: High air humidity is not a substitute for root watering. Avoid overly damp areas to prevent root rot or leggy side shoots.

Soil

A loose, well-draining medium is ideal. A mix containing 50–70% grit or mineral soil is recommended for aeration. Outdoor ground planting is also a viable option.

Fertilizer
