Rainfall occurs mainly during the hot summer months (500–900 mm annually), with dry, cool winters. Soil substrates are well-drained, sandy loams or rocky clays.

Botanical Morphology

  • Diagnostic Features: Features a large, flattened perennial caudex (tuber) reaching up to 20 cm in diameter. Stems are annual, erect, pubescent, up to 10–20 cm tall. The inflorescence forms a dense, cage-like terminal umbel of up to 50 cage-shaped flowers. Flowers are deep purple-brown to cage-black with long, narrow corolla lobes that remain fused at their tips, emitting a strong carrion-like odor to attract fly pollinators.

  • Etymology: The genus name Brachystelma derives from Greek brachys (short) and stelma (crown/garland), referring to the short coronal structure. The specific epithet barberiae honors Mary Elizabeth Barber (1818–1899), a pioneering South African naturalist, botanical collector, and artist who sent specimens to William Jackson Hooker at Kew.

  • Historical Context: First described by William Henry Harvey in 1866 based on specimens collected by Mary Elizabeth Barber in the Eastern Cape. It remains one of the most sought-after caudiciforms among specialized collectors due to its extraordinary, birdcage-like floral clusters.

Light
