Origin

Senna meridionalis is endemic to South and Southwestern Madagascar. It is primarily found in the Tulear (Toliara) province. It belongs to the Fabaceae family (Leguminosae). Due to its unique architectural form and the increasing demand in the succulent trade, it is a highly valued species among collectors of Madagascan flora.

Habitat

In the wild, this species thrives in semi-arid spiny forests and dry deciduous shrublands. It typically grows in calcareous (limestone) soils or sandy plains at low altitudes. The habitat is characterized by extreme drought and high temperatures. Senna meridionalis has evolved into a "pachycaul" shrub or small tree to survive these harsh conditions, utilizing its thickened, woody trunk to store nutrients and moisture.

Description

Senna meridionalis is often described as a "natural bonsai" due to its rugged, aged appearance even at a young age.

  • Trunk & Bark: It develops a stout, lignified (woody) trunk with a beautiful, peeling or fissured silver-gray bark. As it matures, the trunk thickens significantly, giving it the classic "caudiciform" look that collectors prize.

  • Foliage: The plant features delicate, pinnately compound leaves consisting of tiny, oval leaflets. A fascinating characteristic is its nyctinastic movement: the leaflets fold upward and "sleep" at night or under extreme heat to reduce transpiration, reopening with the morning light.

  • Flowers: In late spring or summer, it produces clusters of bright golden-yellow flowers typical of the Senna genus. These flowers provide a vibrant contrast to the dark, zig-zagging woody branches.

  • Cultivation: It is a relatively hardy and rewarding species. It requires full sun to bright direct light to maintain its compact growth and prevent the branches from stretching. Use a well-draining mineral substrate. While it is drought-tolerant, it appreciates regular watering during the peak summer growing season and should be kept mostly dry during winter dormancy.

Product Specifications

  • All plants are shipped bare-root, without pots or soil.
  • To prevent excessive nutrient loss during international shipping, which may make it harder for the plant to recover, we usually trim the leaves before delivery. If you prefer the plant to be shipped without trimming, please contact me in advance.

Planting Instructions

  1. Please collect the plants as soon as possible after arrival to avoid delays.
  2. Open the package immediately upon receipt and replant. Do not place in direct sunlight; keep in a shaded or indirect light location for 2–3 days.
  3. After the adaptation period, start watering and gradually transition the plant to direct sunlight.

Care Guide

  • Light: Requires plenty of light year-round, but avoid direct sunlight, especially during the hottest part of the day.
  • Temperature: Native to tropical arid–semi-arid climates; temperatures below 5°C (41°F) can cause frost damage.
  • Humidity: Prefers well-ventilated environments; avoid overly dry or overly humid conditions.
  • Watering: Water moderately when the soil is 70% dry or completely dry.
○In the warm growing season: 1–2 times per week
○In the cooler dormant season: 2–3 times per month
Adjust according to soil dryness and plant water uptake.
  • Soil: Best grown in well-draining soil; not demanding on soil type.
  • Fertilizing: Rarely needs fertilization; recommend using Osmocote A2 slow-release fertilizer once or twice a year.

Shipping Notice

  • After receiving your order, we require 3–5 days for leaf trimming, soil removal, and drying to ensure safe long-distance transport.
