Origin

Pachypodium decaryi is endemic to Northern Madagascar, specifically restricted to the limestone regions around Antsiranana (Diego Suarez) and the Ankarana Massif. It was named in honor of Raymond Decary, a French botanist who extensively explored the island's flora. Due to its limited distribution and the threats of habitat loss, it is a rare species protected under CITES Appendix I (one of the few in the genus with this highest level of protection).

Habitat

In the wild, this species thrives in deciduous dry forests and rocky shrublands. It is a lithophyte, primarily growing on limestone outcrops (tsingy) at low altitudes (up to 300 meters). The environment is characterized by a stark seasonal contrast: a hot, wet summer and a prolonged, bone-dry winter. The plant survives by anchoring its thick roots into limestone crevices and utilizing its massive succulent trunk to store water for the dry months.

Description

Pachypodium decaryi is a pachycaul tree or shrub known for its architectural elegance and "clean" look compared to its thornier relatives.

  • Caudex & Stem: It develops a massive, conical to bottle-shaped caudex that can eventually reach up to 1 meter in diameter in the wild. The bark is notably smooth, silvery-gray, and mostly spineless as it matures, though young seedlings may possess small, inconspicuous stipular spines.

  • Foliage: It produces a crown of large, elliptical, and glossy dark green leaves. The leaves are relatively broad compared to other Pachypodium species and exhibit a prominent light-green midrib.

  • Flowers: This species is prized for its spectacular large, snow-white flowers. The blooms are funnel-shaped, fragrant, and can reach up to 8–10 cm in diameter, making them among the most ornamental in the entire genus.

  • Cultivation: P. decaryi is a slow-growing but rewarding species. It requires full sun to bright light and a very well-draining mineral substrate. It is highly sensitive to cold and excess moisture during its winter dormancy. Maintaining a warm environment is crucial for its survival during the resting phase.

Product Specifications

  • All plants are shipped bare-root, without pots or soil.
  • To prevent excessive nutrient loss during international shipping, which may make it harder for the plant to recover, we usually trim the leaves before delivery. If you prefer the plant to be shipped without trimming, please contact me in advance.

Planting Instructions

  1. Please collect the plants as soon as possible after arrival to avoid delays.
  2. Open the package immediately upon receipt and replant. Do not place in direct sunlight; keep in a shaded or indirect light location for 2–3 days.
  3. After the adaptation period, start watering and gradually transition the plant to direct sunlight.

Care Guide

  • Light: Requires plenty of light year-round, but avoid direct sunlight, especially during the hottest part of the day.
  • Temperature: Native to tropical arid–semi-arid climates; temperatures below 5°C (41°F) can cause frost damage.
  • Humidity: Prefers well-ventilated environments; avoid overly dry or overly humid conditions.
  • Watering: Water moderately when the soil is 70% dry or completely dry.
○In the warm growing season: 1–2 times per week
○In the cooler dormant season: 2–3 times per month
Adjust according to soil dryness and plant water uptake.
  • Soil: Best grown in well-draining soil; not demanding on soil type.
  • Fertilizing: Rarely needs fertilization; recommend using Osmocote A2 slow-release fertilizer once or twice a year.
