Origin

This plant is a horticultural hybrid derived from Euphorbia tubiglans. The parent species is endemic to South Africa, primarily found in the Eastern Cape Province (notably the Steytlerville Karoo). In the wild, E. tubiglans is a rare and localized species. This hybrid was specifically developed by succulent breeders to combine the rugged, subterranean growth habit of the parent with more prolific offsetting or unique surface textures from other African Euphorbias.

Habitat

As a cultivated hybrid, it is not found in nature. However, its lineage is rooted in the arid and semi-desert Karoo regions. These areas are characterized by shale-rich soils, intense summer heat, and sparse, erratic rainfall. In cultivation, this hybrid thrives in conditions that mimic its rocky, well-drained native environment, requiring high light intensity and a strict dry period during dormancy to maintain its compact form.

Description

The Euphorbia tubiglans hybrid is a fascinating dwarf succulent prized for its geometric structure and specialized flowering parts.

  • Caudex & Stem: It typically features a thick, fleshy, and often subterranean caudex (rootstock). Above the soil, it produces short, cylindrical, or globose stems that are deeply angled or ribbed. The skin is usually a dull grayish-green to olive, sometimes developing a purplish tint under high light.

  • Tubercles & Spine Shields: The ridges are lined with prominent tubercles. Unlike many fiercely spined Euphorbias, this hybrid often has reduced or soft bristles, making it relatively "user-friendly" for handling.

  • Flowers (Cyathia): The most defining characteristic inherited from E. tubiglans is the tubular shape of the nectar glands (hence the name "tubiglans"). The flowers are typically small, yellowish-green, and emerge from the apex of the stems.

  • Growth Habit: It is a slow-growing, compact plant that often clumps from the base over time, forming a dense "cluster" that looks exceptional in ceramic or stone-textured pots.

Product Specifications

  • All plants are shipped bare-root, without pots or soil.
  • To prevent excessive nutrient loss during international shipping, which may make it harder for the plant to recover, we usually trim the leaves before delivery. If you prefer the plant to be shipped without trimming, please contact me in advance.

Planting Instructions

  1. Please collect the plants as soon as possible after arrival to avoid delays.
  2. Open the package immediately upon receipt and replant. Do not place in direct sunlight; keep in a shaded or indirect light location for 2–3 days.
  3. After the adaptation period, start watering and gradually transition the plant to direct sunlight.

Care Guide

  • Light: Requires plenty of light year-round, but avoid direct sunlight, especially during the hottest part of the day.
  • Temperature: Native to tropical arid–semi-arid climates; temperatures below 5°C (41°F) can cause frost damage.
  • Humidity: Prefers well-ventilated environments; avoid overly dry or overly humid conditions.
  • Watering: Water moderately when the soil is 70% dry or completely dry.
○In the warm growing season: 1–2 times per week
○In the cooler dormant season: 2–3 times per month
Adjust according to soil dryness and plant water uptake.
  • Soil: Best grown in well-draining soil; not demanding on soil type.
  • Fertilizing: Rarely needs fertilization; recommend using Osmocote A2 slow-release fertilizer once or twice a year.

Shipping Notice

  • After receiving your order, we require 3–5 days for leaf trimming, soil removal, and drying to ensure safe long-distance transport.
  • We ship via air freight; delivery time is usually 8–16 days.
  • During transit, plants may enter dormancy and appear shriveled, discolored, or reduced in size—this is normal. They will recover after proper care upon arrival.

(For Wholesale Orders) International Shipping

  • We can provide a phytosanitary certificate.
  • The certificate fee is not included in the plant price and will be charged separately. For most standard orders, the fee is typically USD 100.
